To Better Your Marriage With Communication

To Better Your Marriage Is Easier Than You Think

In the movie theatre we watch the fairytale ending in happy marriage and give it little thought as we step out into the light of day, yet marriage is an ever growing and changing bond. Communication is a wonderful key to better your marriage and hand in hand with empathy you can look forward to a lifetime of companionship.

Today’s married couple is faced with many pressures from the society we live in and conflicts within the relationship that are not dealt with often lead to unhappiness and often, divorce. Conflict can actually be useful tools in teaching a married couple how to approach and deal with negative issues in a positive and constructive way.

Your first tool in how to better your marriage is empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand the other person’s viewpoint from an emotional as well as mental perspective. If you can visualize how they feel about a situation it makes it easier to understand why they respond as they do to a particular conflict and thus which steps to take to solve the conflict.

Being able to respond with empathy is another key to better your marriage. Once your partner has stated their feelings it is important to acknowledge them and realize why your actions have led to them feeling angry or sad or hurt. It is also a way for you to understand what it is about your actions that caused this reaction in them and to, in the future; steer away from creating situations that cause negative reactions in your partner. This works both ways.

When you are faced with a conflict remember to approach it with a calm, rational mind set. Stick to the topic at hand and don’t bring up old arguments or past situations that have no bearing on the present. If you have criticism, try to keep it constructive and don’t break the other person down by making negative personal statements.

Another good tip to better your marriage is to talk about your feelings with your partner as they pertain to their actions. Rather than pointing out what they have done wrong in your eyes, try to explain how that action made you feel and why. Communication is the key to all your conflict resolutions in the future.

When working on a solution it makes sense to aim for a happy resolution for both parties. One sided conflict solution is only going to leave one of the parties dissatisfied with the results. Try to compromise and choose options that suit you both. Always make positive choices. It will only cause more problems if you resolve a conflict in such a way that you both feel as though you come out on the losing end, with both being denied their wishes, along the lines of “If I can’t do this, then you cannot do that.”

Take time out to better your marriage by scheduling regular quality time with your partner to discuss your progress. Touch base and plan a romantic dinner or some quiet time where you can relax and talk about your conflict resolutions and if you are both happy with things in the relationship. This is also a wonderful way to improve and strengthen the bond of marriage that brought you together in the first place.
