I myself took it during a summer semester thinking that there would be less people in the class, but I found out it doesn't matter whether it's a group of 2 or a group of 50. Speech giving is just petrifying for some of us. It's one of those things that everyone dreads, whether it be in front of a group of strangers or a room full of friends. I always envy those that are completely relaxed and comfortable doing it. I think the hardest thing about giving best man wedding speeches is that you're expected to be humorous and funny. Face it..not everyone can pull that off! Planning and preparation is definitely the key. If you plan and rehearse your speech it will be a lot more comfortable than trying to continually reflect back on a piece of paper and finding where you were at in your speech. I've seen some really well done best man speeches and also witnessed some "horror shows", and you're right...those that are well prepared tend to pull off the task much easier!
